The American Basketball Association known as the ABA is a league that
originally operated from 1967 to 1976 before merging with the NBA. During this period
the ABA exposed players who possessed exceptional athletic abilities, and later produced
many of today’s legendary basketball players of the NBA. A revived ABA league was
formed in late 1999 by Joe Newman and Richard Tinkham. The ABA experienced
tremendous growth with over 50 teams in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Hawaii
all competing for the ABA Championship.
In 2006, a new ABA team called the Houston Undertakers emerged in America’s
fourth largest city. It is headed by owner and businessman, Larry D. Leonard, II and
Shuwana Leonard. However, the team has since been renamed and will be entering its
third season known as the Houston Takers. The Leonard’s along with their staff

basketball team, exposing new and
exciting talent to the city of Houston, as well as throughout the United States and
surrounding countries. Houston has a tremendous group of sports-based fans
who enjoy both professional teams and amateur leagues. The Houston Takers will participate as an entity that taps into this existing market offered throughout
Harris County and surrounding areas. The Houston Takers will function as a community
driven organization, linking the old with the young, joining various cultures and social
backgrounds to all experience the fabric of Houston’s finest attributes of fun, family, and
fellowship. We will commit to our mission and invite all to proclaim “This Time It’s Personal” in our 2008-2009 ABA season. |
